WFD Cycle 2 lake chironomids classification

This dataset is a subset of "WFD Classification Status Cycle 2" and contains classification data for Chironomids in lakes. Chironomid populations within any given waterbody closely reflect both the nutrient and pH conditions within the water body. Scoring systems that allow the impact of both pressures to be assessed have been developed. However, currently only the CPET nutrient scoring system has been through intercalibration and is used for water body classification under the Water Framework Directive (WFD). CPET is an important tool for monitoring large water bodies. Its passive sampling methodology, compared with the direct sampling methods used in all other ecological techniques makes it particularly good for representing ecological function and providing classification at a waterbody scale. The tool uses a series of predictor variables to produce a reference chrionomid community for the waterbody, which it then compares with the observed chrionomid community to produce an EQR value.
