Open Space Assessment 2026

What is open space?

Open spaces are freely accessible green areas that are available to the public. This includes:

  • Local recreation grounds and parks
  • Children's play areas
  • Facilities for teenagers e.g., skate parks, BMX tracks
  • Multi use games areas
  • Allotments
  • Natural green spaces (woodlands, wildlife areas and nature reserves)
  • Informal open spaces for ball games, picnics, dog walking

Why is the assessment being developed?

Access to a network of high quality open spaces and opportunities for sport and physical activity is important for the health and well-being of communities, and can deliver wider benefits for nature and support efforts to address climate change.

The assessment is being undertaken to provide a robust up to date assessment of open spaces in Northumberland. It will help make decisions in line with the Northumberland Local Plan, help prioritise open space improvements, and inform future planning policy and guidance.
