Non-linear dynamics of volcanic systems

This project will investigate the dynamical consequences of strongly non-linear and coupled property changes that occur when magmas erupt from an open-system magma chamber. The project will develop models for unsteady conduit flow and magma chamber pressurisation during replenishment. The aim will be to couple conduit and magma chamber flow together to elucidate feedback responses between chamber processes and surface activity. The models will be applied to geophysical and observational data from recent well-documented eruptions, including the Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat.
