The dataset shows the spatial extent of the statutory safeguarding zones
represented on the corresponding hardcopy statutory safeguarding plans.
Purpose:
Safeguarding is a statutory based consultative system whereby MOD arranges
with Directing Authorities (Communities and Local
Government in England; the Scottish Government in Scotland, and the Welsh
Government for Wales) for the issue of directions under the Town
and Country Planning Acts to Local Planning Authorities (LPAs). The
Directions consist of a safeguarding map and a covering letter which is
signed by the relevant Directing Authority. LPAs are requested to consult
D.I.O. Safeguarding before granting planning permission for development
within safeguarding zones which meet criteria in the direction and the
safeguarding map. The 5 statutory safeguarding plan types are: Plan A -
Aerodromes Plan B - Birdstrike Zones Plan E - Explosive Storage Areas Plan
Plan R - Ranges (Air Weapons Ranges) Plan T - Technical sites
